Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2 we follow the National Curriculum.
In Year Five each form is under the direct care of their form teachers for the majority of their subjects and activities. However, the extended age range of the Academy means that students will have access to specialist teaching staff and facilities in certain subjects, for example PE and sports, science and the creative arts, far earlier than might be the case in other schools.
This is a key strength of our school model.
Key Stage 2 – Subjects
The Key Stage 2 curriculum is delivered by specialist primary trained staff initially in a dedicated Year 5 teaching centre, and then in zoned and dedicated teaching spaces on site.
Literacy and numeracy underpins all educational achievement, and we have a relentless focus on developing this fundamental skills throughout Key Stage 2, and during a student’s entire time at the Academy.
We successfully operate the Accelerated Reader Programme at Key Stage Two and beyond, and student engagement in this is extremely high. The results are frequently transformational, with both boys and girls rapidly progressing their written and speaking skills, as well as becoming avid readers.
Our English programme includes a balance of reading, writing, spelling, speaking and listening. We particularly use ‘big write’ and ‘big talk’ as part of our daily lessons. Key skills of handwriting, grammar and spelling are explicitly taught. English lessons utilise a wide range of teaching and learning techniques, with careful differentiation to engage all learners. Often there will be elements of drama and performance, along with reading challenges and debating.
Our Mathematics programme includes oral work, mental calculation, computational skills and problem-solving in a variety of contexts. We teach maths and numeracy throughout the week and employ a wide range of teaching and learning techniques covering numbers, shape, space, measurement and data-handling. Further, the faculty makes use of on-line learning tools and technologies where appropriate.
Science enables children to make sense of the world around them. The development of a scientific, investigative approach supports their learning by encouraging their natural curiosity. Students learn to develop and then test hypotheses through theory, experimentation and observation. Science lessons take place in the form classrooms, dedicated laboratories, and outdoors across our extensive rural site.
Religious education shares common ground with other areas of the curriculum and religious and ethical / moral issues may be included in other subjects. RE is also addressed as an identifiable area within our curriculum planning and our provision reflects the Agreed Syllabus.
Design Technology prepares children to live and work in an increasingly technological world. This subject gives pupils the opportunity and capability to solve problems, to design and make and to test products and solutions for themselves. Theory and practice are blended to enable students to develop cognitive and motor skills.
Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology
ICT supports the whole curriculum. Each class will have a set of mobile devices available to support the children’s teaching and learning. We have a policy for the managed use of the internet. Computer Science is taught from Year 5 onwards, with introductions to the basics of computer programming and programming languages.
History and Geography
History and geography are taught discreetly and as part of wider themes. Direct teaching, investigations and visits develop the child’s views of the past and the present. There is study of local history and geography as well as examination of wider global issues and challenges. Immersion days, where students experience school as a Victorian child are very popular and bring the subject to life.
Music, Art and Creativity
We believe that every child should have regular access to the arts in order to develop as a whole person and lead a rich and fulfilling life. We know that expression through the creative arts is a key driver for success across the entire curriculum and all subjects.
We have newly developed String and Wind bands, a wide range of peripatetic music lessons available, and every KS2 student benefits from specialist music teaching and facilities.
Our new Multi-media and Drama studio will give fantastic new opportunities for students to develop practical and theoretical skills and be involved in exciting performances and production work.
Art encompasses working in a range of mediums, including pencil, pen, paint, clay and ceramics, sculpture, textiles and other materials. Students explore their own perceptions of the world, and learn practical skills alongside a developing appreciation of the aesthetic. From September 2016 Art lessons will take place in our brand new roof top art studios and outdoor terraces.
Sports are an integral part of life at Etonbury Academy and all students are expected to participate to the best of their ability. At KS2 there is focus on teamwork, enjoyment, healthy lifestyles and confidence. We know that physical fitness and physical awareness are important in developing a healthy lifestyle. A range of dance, gym, sports and biking will be covered.
Our KS2 sporting teams are very successful, and regularly succeed in local and regional tournaments and competitions. The Academy is developing exceptional sporting facilities for use by all students at all levels, and has the aim to inspire each and every student through the teamwork and camaraderie of sport. We recognise that every student benefits from physical activity, but that not every child enjoys exactly the same physical activities, so we have many extra-curricular sporting clubs and we are even the National Schools Champions at Cheerleading – which is hugely popular amongst our students (both boys and girls!).
PSHCE and Sex Education
Sex Education is an important part of our broader Personal, Social and Health Education programme. We recognise that this can be a complex though vital area of child development and safety and work closely with parents, keeping them fully informed, at all levels. Further, we hold candid information evenings for parents where they can ask any questions directly to delivery staff in a supportive and open forum.
